Sight-soothing illustrations, intriguing surf history and a heart-breaking but life-affirming personal story. In Waves by AJ Dungo is a rare and exquisite graphic novel every surfer and art lover will covet.

This is a truly unique surf book, every page is a picture you’d hang on the wall. The natural and honest words will make you smile and shed a tear.

Inside waves

In Waves AJ Dungo - Duke the ultimate beach boy

Duke, the ultimate beach boy

From the fascinating lives of Duke Kahanamoku and Tom Blake, to a tragic experience of loss, grieving and solace in surfing. In Waves weaves these tales in an irresistible 367 page tome you’ll treasure forever.

If you’re wondering how a graphic novel, a story about young love cut short by cancer and the history of surfing can work together – trust me it does. Like all good stories the threads begin with contrasting backgrounds (literally so in this novel) but each thread slowly becomes entwined to create a tapestry with impact and purpose.

It comes in waves

In Waves AJ Dungo - her body had its limits

Free from land bound restrictions

When asked about his grief Dungo explains that ‘it comes in waves’, a metaphor with many levels. Personally I like Tom Blake’s monologue towards the end, where he explains:

‘While on a board, one is truly free from land bound restrictions… the cares and worries of the subconscious mind, are erased and forgotten, until the tensions of the living again build up’.

In Waves describes the rejuvenating powers of surfing better than any book I’ve read.

About AJ Dungo

In Waves AJ Dungo - she liked surfing

He shared her passion for the waves

AJ Dungo is an illustrator, surfer and skateboarder from California.

In Dungo’s own words:

This book is a love letter to my late partner Kristen Tuason. It’s a book that highlights the significance of relationships, past and present. My hope is that it communicates the idea that one important person can change your life forever.

Duke inspired Blake who changed the course of surf history. Kristen’s profound influence on Dungo will touch the lives of all who enjoy his work.

In Waves is available now for pre-order on Amazon, from the publisher Nobrow, and all good bookshops.
