Free Sewage Alert Service

by Andrew Norton

Sign up now to the Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) ‘sewage alert service’ for free, and they will text you when sewage is discharged from a Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO).

This summer SAS have added another 17 beaches to the service across Cornwall, Devon and Saltburn. This brings the current number of beaches available under the sewage alert service to over 50 (for the full list see below).

So what are CSOs and does this information really matter?. A CSO is a Combined Sewage Overflow drain. When a sewage pumping station or treatment works is over capacity, the water companies use the CSOs as an emergency exit for raw sewage and rainwater.

CSOs obviously play an important role in the sewage infrastructure. However, SAS have discovered “they are used far too often to dispose of raw sewage rather than water companies treating the sewage”. These emergency systems are being abused by water companies and are causing potential health threats to water users.

So if you want to be notified the next time raw sewage is flushed out at a surf spot near you; sign up to the sewage alert service and make an informed choice about where to get wet.

SAS are campaigning for all bathing waters in the UK that have CSOs discharging sewage, to be included in the Sewage Alert Service. But for now you can sign up top any of the beaches listed below, by visiting the Surfers Against Sewage website.
